Amidst the aftermath of the unrest from April through June of last year, many Timorese still insist on staying in Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Camps, despite serious Government efforts to convince them to return to their homes. This fear of returning comes from the threat to life and property posed by violent youth gangs.
Science of Life Systems 24/7 (SOLS 24/7) returned to Dili, and committed itself to the improvement of youth educational programs in the country. Mr. Raj Ridvan Singh and Mr. Rouern Van Dorn @ Mercy returned in late October of 2006 to assess the situation, set up the Teacher Training Center (TTC), and put into effect all possible collaborations.
A four thousand square meter area adjacent to the main road in Fatuhada-Comoro, Dili, Timor Leste was leased for 5 years. Along with the renovations and physical setup of the TTC, the SOLS 24/7 Team worked with the NGO Forum (FONGTIL), in spreading the word for enrollment, as well as in making the project known to government officials, village chiefs, individuals and other friends.
On the 13th of November 2006 SOLS 24/7 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with H.E Dr. Aresenio Paixo Bano, Minister of Community Re-Insertion & Labor. With this MOU, SOLS 24/7 will work within the guidelines of the RDTL (Democractic Republic of Timor-Leste), and benefit from the relevant information, visas, tax-free status and other incentives RDTL will provide.
On the 16th of November enrollment began, with SOLS 24/7 inviting the youth and their parents and relatives for an introduction and briefing on the 2-year comprehensive training program. Within ten days, thirty-nine boarding students from ten out of thirteen districts in Timor Leste started the program. This was already a significant success, as many families were still in fear of the unrest in Dili.
Many parents are very grateful for the presence of SOLS 24/7 in Timor Leste, and have passed many heartwarming praises of love and gratitude. They believe in the SOLS 24/7 Systems of Social change, and provide their full support.
All the students along with Teacher Raj & Mercy worked in the afternoons to do the entire construction and physical setup. Wood for the tables and chairs were bought from the district, and everything was bought at the best prices available. The water tank, classroom, 67 tables and benches (3 students to a table & bench), outside kitchen and the flooring, were all completed.
