The Department of Skills Development (JPK), Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources is committed to being a world class leader in producing skilled manpower resources through the implementation of National Training Certification Programs. SOLS 24/7 is honoured to be working hand-in-hand with the government to promote their skills training systems. SOLS 24/7 supports the governments goal in assisting youth to enhance their skills proficiency, and in turn produce knowledge-workers who are able to contribute to nation building. SOLS 24/7 as a JPK Accredited Training Center is currently providing the Computer System Assistant Technician and Computer System Technician (SKM IT-020 Level 2 & 3). SOLs 24/7 is also in the process of researching and building a syllabus for JPK Community Development training program (SKM OT-030 Level 2 & 3), making SOLS 24/7 the first Accredited Training Center to do so in the country.
The Hong Leong Foundation is the Premier Partner of SOLS 24/7′s Kuala Lumpur YDC (Youth Development Center).Through the Foundation‘s financial support, SOLS 24/7′s YDC has been able to cover all operational costs as well as provide free food for its boarding students. This has seen an immediate impact with the students as their families are freed from some of the burden of providing money for their living expenses while studying in SOLS 24/7′s YDC. The Hong Leong Foundation is a corporate foundation and the charity arm of Hong Leong Group Malaysia where most of its philanthropic activities are conducted. The Foundation‘s primary concern is that of addressing poverty in Malaysia through Education and Community Welfare. Some of the ways they fulfill their goals are by addressing the basic needs of those living in poverty, building infrastructure to empower youth and communities as well as funding scholarship and training programs.
The Berjaya Cares Foundation (BCF) is the Berjaya Corporation group of companies CSR arm, committed to inculcating the spirit of caring and giving towards service to the community. BCF is supporting SOLS 24/7 to set up a SOLS 24/7 Youth Development Centre in Sabah, Malaysia. SOLS Sabah will be the first fully environmentally focused, ‘green’ school. Renewable energy efforts such as micro-hydro, solar and biogas will be implemented.
LCP Group has generously provided the SOLS 24/7‘s Youth Development Center (YDC), Kuala Lumpur with a 5-floor corner lot building, lease free. The building, which can accommodate up to 100 boarding students, has enabled SOLS 24/7 to provide a conducive studying environment and provide a higher standard of living for the students.
SOLS 24/7 is a recipient of Microsoft software from TechSoup Asia. This has enabled SOLS 24/7 to use up-to-date and relevant technology more effectively in empowering youth and providing them with the best non-formal education. TechSoup Asia‘s mission to enable NGO’s to operate at their full potential through available technology resources and knowledge, supports SOLS 24/7‘s vision of channeling technology, research and development into effective training programs for our students. SOLS 24/7 is a partner of the TechSoup Global Network, to work towards a technologically empowered, networked worldwide NGO sector, both in and out of Malaysia.
The MyKasih Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to help the less fortunate Malaysians regardless of race, religion and descent. They aim to enable poor and needy families achieve more independence and give their children a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. A large part of The MyKasih Foundation’s support has been the donation of food supplies for the SOLS 24/7 Youth Development Center, Kuala Lumpur. As this has long term benefits, the food supply donation has truly helped SOLS 24/7 maintain a consistant supply of nutritious meals for the students and teachers. Also, their support of providing the financial resources to buy air tickets, SOLS 24/7 Malaysia was able to bring over the first intake of students from Sabah and Sarawak. Providing these youth with the first step towards obtaining education has been crucial in empowering the underprivileged and marginalized in Malaysia.
The Vijayaratnam Foundation is channeling support to grassroot communities by financially supporting SOLS 24/7′s Community Center‘s in Paya Mengkuang, Pahang; Tapah, Perak and Masai, Johor. The Foundations’seducational focus is to reach out and provide life-changing educational opportunities to those in society who have been excluded.The Vijayaratnam Foundation’s strong belief is that access to education is essential for every Malaysian citizen to achieve their full potential, lead productive lives and contribute to the competitive strength and economic welfare of the nation.The Vijayaratnam Foundation facilitates the inception and implementation of various initiatives and projects through work with the public and private sectors, civil society, and the philanthropic community.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and SOLS 24/7 are collaborating on a capacity building initiative, the ‘MY TRAINING CENTER’, which helps refugees youth tap their potential and build a platform for a better future. The training center, located in Selayang, Kuala Lumpur provides classes from Monday to Friday. Each day, the youth are taught English, Motivational stories and comprehension as well as Computer skills.
Carrefour Malaysia, a leading hypermarket in the country, is exemplifying its core values through providing the SOLS 24/7 Youth Development Center in Kuala Lumpur with weekly donations of fresh produce, food stuffs, household and personal care items. Through their support, the SOLS 24/7students are able to enjoy nutritious and quality meals as well as reduce their living expenses. This represents a crucial part of their education as it cultivates an awareness of nutritious meal preparation and provides them with the necessary energy to take part in the intensive learning environment.Through its involvement with SOLS 24/7, Carrefour Malaysia is supporting the development of a skilled local workforce and is also contributing to sustaining local communities through providing work opportunities for the SOLS 24/7 students.
Tandemic is a dynamic, energized, social movement consulting firm providing for strategies, training and execution for campaigns and technology development. Part of their service includes building social movements by organizing communities around causes. Tandemic supported SOLS 24/7 by providing web development for the SOLS 24/7 website and continues to connect SOLS 24/7 with other social enterprises and companies to enhance and expand our programs.
Yayasan Chow Kit (formerly known as Nur Salam) is a youth activity hub located in the center of Kuala Lumpur, running programs for youth and children. Yayasan Chow Kit was opened to serve the needs of the children of Chow Kit, an area notorious for prostitution, drug sales, high crime rates and a neighbourhood of oftentimes, undocumented immigrants. While most children come from the Chow Kit area, some come from other parts of Malaysia through trafficking. Some are stateless, do not own birth certificates or other relevant documents and are not able to attend school. Others are children of prostitutes and drug addicts. Together with YCK, SOLS 24/7 is working towards building a better future for the YCK children by providing Motivation, English, Computer skills, ICT (Hardware, trouble shooting, repairing computers) classes as well as confidence and relationship building activities (singing songs, presenting ideas, learning the guitar). Classes are carried out 5 days a week.
SPW Enterprise IT is an independent facility that specializes in refurbishing and remarketing obsolete and used IT assets.They also provide consultation services, data recovery, ethical and safe disposal, complete data sanitization, and the regeneration of equipment through resale or redeployment.They are committed to the development of poor communities throughout Asia. All of the IT assets refurbished by their company are made ready for re-sale to impoverished nations, allowing underprivileged people access to computers. SPW Enterprise IT is supporting SOLS 24/7′s Community Centers by providing each center with high quality refurbished desktops and laptops.
A youth run organization, AIESEC provides international internship, leadership opportunities and participate in a global learning environment for its members. As such, AIESEC supportsSOLS 24/7 by providing a platform for volunteers from around the world, through its Global Exchange Program, to participate in SOLS 24/7′s training centre activities.To date, volunteers from Holland, Budapest, India, Vietnam, China, Columbia and many more have enriched their lives and the lives of the SOLS 24/7 students through volunteerism.
SOLS 24/7 secured a grant from IYF (International Youth Foundation) Through a Starbucks Innovation fund. The grant went towards the renovations of SOLS 24/7 Youth Development Center in Melaka, Malaysia.In 2001, IYF launched a global initiative called YouthActionNet to identify, encourage, and enhance the leadership potential of this emerging generation of young leaders. Over the past five years, YouthActionNet has provided more than 120 young social entrepreneurs with a combination of skills, mentoring, idea-sharing, to enhance their leadership abilities and the impact of their projects in over 50 countries. in 2008 the Starbucks Innovation Fund has provided up to 25 of these YouthActionNet Global Fellows with the financial resources and capacity building resources they need to expand their social projects and reach more beneficiaries.
TIMOR LESTE
SOLS 24/7 is the implementing agency carrying out SOLS 24/7 English and Computer training programs for the USAID/Timor Lestee-learning center initiative at the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL). The program would train UNTL undergraduates, lecturers and staff in software, such as Microsoft Office, utilizing, researching and communicating via the Internet as well as touch typing and English language classes. The two computer labs are the first free internet training and access points for students at UNTL. The new state-of-the-art centers offer technology training and a high-speed internet connection that will equip UNTL students with the skills needed to participate in today’s global and knowledge-based economy.
Thanks to a grant from USAID/Timor Leste, hundreds of students and faculty now have access to cutting edge tech tools and innovative eLearning content and professional development training. SOLS 24/7 in partnership with SRA International, Inc., a contractor for USAID, established two eLearning centers, each located at National University Timor Leste’s (UNTL) Faculty of Economics and the Faculty Social and Political Sciences. The project goal was to prepare East Timorese college graduates for the challenges and demands of the global economy. A key cornerstone of this effort is project sustainability. SOLS 24/7 is operating a fee-based training and Internet access center at the university’s library. Fixed income from the cafe is contributed to a pre-paid maintenance fund used to cover ongoing costs related to the eLearning centers. The project sets a high benchmark for future computer education programs in East Timor.
SOLS 24/7 secured USD 50,000 and Microsoft Software worth USD 75,819 from a Microsoft Grant for the expansion into districts in Timor-Leste, after impressing the panel during the the Scale-up Pitching session at YSEF in 2008. Microsoft Unlimited Potential–Community Technology Skills Programpromotes workforce development and IT skills training programs that enable young people and adults to realize their potential. Through cash grants, software donations, technology solutions, and specialized curriculum, the program supports community technology centers around the world.
Idea!s is a youth-led social enterprise based in the Philippines. They are a non-stock, non-profit design and communications consultancy, combining creativity, youth volunteerism and technology in order to provide multimedia and technical services for development organizations.
Youth Social Enterprise Initiative, a special project of the Global Knowledge Partnership supports the Science of Life Systems 24/7 program in Timor Leste. YSEI provides mentoring and funded USD 15,000 for SOLS 24/7‘s project in Timor Leste. SOLS 24/7 were part of the YSEI fellowship for 2007.
CAMBODIA
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport
The vision of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) is to establish and develop human resources of the very highest quality and ethics in order to develop a knowledge-based society within Cambodia. Non-formal education aims to ensure that all children, youth, adults, poor people and those with disabilities realize their rights to a basic education and lifelong learning. MoEYS also provides opportunities for youth and adults to access life skills and become literate. SOLS 24/7-GDI has signed an MOU with the Ministry as an organization that supports the goals of the nation and are providing programs in line with their vision.
COPION (Cooperation & Participation In Overseas NGOs) is an Non-Profit and Non-Governmental Organization under the auspice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea, which aims at contributing to the establishment of global civil society by dispatching Korean youth and senior volunteers to the third world countries regularly and assisting the developmental works of their local NGOs financially.
SOLS 24/7-GDI and COIPON work on three main projects together: The first is a long-term volunteering program, which Korean youth come to volunteer in our school for 3 months or more. The second is a short-term volunteering program where Korean students come for the short period during their holidays to experience a different culture and lastly, the Development Funding Program (Copion Financial Aid).
Samsung-COPION HOPE for Children Program: Global Civil Society Partnership for Education.Samsung-COPION HOPE for Children Program is COPION’s Development Funding Program (Copion Financial Aid). This program is sponsored by Samsung and the Community Chest of Korea. It aims to enhance rights of education for underprivileged children and youth in developing countries by providing project grants for local non-governmental and non-profit organizations. It also has the goal of strengthening networking and developing the participation capacities of civil society organizations by sharing their experiences and resources through on-line communication and off-line work shops.
SOLS 24/7-GDI is one of the grant recipients for 2012. We are opening 5 new province centers to bring education and training to rural communities.
