World Mental Health Day was established by the World Federation for Mental Health. After this group realised in 1992 that there was a growing issue with mental health, they decided to raise awareness by establishing an official day of recognition for those who suffer. Every year World Mental Health Day has a different theme. The theme for this year is “Young people and mental health in a changing world”, which is likely to reference social media.
Don’t suffer alone, reach out
The entire world is affected by mental health issues.
According to the World Health Organization one in five people suffer from mental health disorders. This one in five group is not isolated. Due to the high frequency of these disorders, everyone comes into contact with them, either first or second-hand. When someone has a bad day and yells at you, they may not mean to. They may have an issue which nobody is helping them with and this may be a symptom of their hurt. In one way or another the changing attitudes brought on by mental health disorders spread throughout groups, and eventually touch all of us.
Many do not accept mental health disorders as legitimate medical conditions.
Mental health is repeatedly ridiculed by people who don’t think that they’re real. However, mental health disorders are observable, diagnosable, and recognized by governments globally as a source of concern. The problem is that we can’t see mental health disorders. Like a cancer they grow within us without our knowing that they’re there. While cancers receive publicity on cigarette packs nobody is advertising the impact of mental health, so they continue to grow in the shadows unknown and unassailed.
Different genders are more at risk of different disorders.
According to Our World in Data, men are more susceptible to substance abuse; they are more likely to drink and/or use drugs excessively. Men should monitor their consumption of inebriants and seek help should they begin to rely on these substances. Women are more susceptible to mental health disorders. Anxiety, depression, bipolar syndrome, anorexia, and bulimia are all more prevalent among women. Women are at a higher risk from these mental health disorders, and ought to be aware of the early warning signs so as to treat them immediately after onset.
Both men and women are susceptible to these issues.
While each group is slightly more at risk from specific subsets of mental health disorders, both can contract such issues. It is important to be aware of what proper mental health looks like, and how to promote it. Being self-aware is the first step towards avoiding future issues.
Physical contact promotes mental well-being
Those who suffer with mental health disorders need compassion.
It is not their fault. It is not weakness. Mental health disorders come from a wide range of factors and can occur to anyone. When these issues do arise, it’s important that people support those who suffer as much as possible. Often just talking openly and without judgement is enough. We don’t talk enough about these issues and this is the major reason that World Mental Health Day was established. It will continue to be an important day of awareness until we have successfully combated the full range of these disorders.
